To speak to us for advice, treatment or to book an appointment please contact

When you access Sexual Health Services Nottingham & Nottinghamshire via the central booking telephone line you will be triaged by one of our reception staff. This means that they will ask you a short list of questions to identify where you might be best seen. Individuals with no symptoms can usually be allocated an appointment at any site, whereas those with symptoms may need an appointment at a specific site.

Individuals that will require to be seen at main hospital sites (rather than in a community clinic) includes:

  • Females complaining of lower abdominal pain or pain when having sex for less than a month.
  • Females who are currently pregnant and who are experiencing abnormal discharge suggestive of a sexually transmitted infection.
  • Individuals specifically requiring post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following sexual exposure to HIV.
  • Individuals who have experienced recent (within the last one month) sexual assault.
  • Males complaining of either testicular pain or abnormal lumps or aching in the testicles.
  • Patients requiring assessment, monitoring and supply of PrEP.

Please be aware that if you attend a community clinic with any of the above health issues, then you will be required to make an alternative appointment at one of our main hospital sites by telephoning 0300 131 7010.

What to expect during your visit

When you visit a sexual health clinic you will talk to one of our healthcare professionals. They will ask you about your symptoms and why you would like to be tested.

We will also ask you about general health, allergies and we ask a few personal questions about your sexual activity, this is so we can advise you on the test available and so we know what your risks are for specific infections.

It is all confidential and we don’t discuss your consultation with anyone else unless you agree.

STI check-up will test for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, HIV and Syphilis. The check-up will involve a discussion about your sexual history and any risks that you may have had and depending upon your individual circumstances you may need to:

  • Provide a urine sample.
  • Take a swab yourself.
  • Have a blood test.

If you have been experiencing symptoms, you will usually need to be examined, and further tests may be required.

Please note that not all clinics offer checks for symptoms. So, please check what is available in your local clinic when booking your appointment.

We have the facility to provide some results straight away and to give the appropriate treatment whilst you are in clinic. This includes tests for thrush, bacterial vaginosis (BV), gonorrhoea and trichomonas (TV).

For all other test results, you will be informed of your results about 7-10 days after your visit. If an infection is diagnosed, you will be asked to return to Sexual Health Services Nottingham & Nottinghamshire for treatment to cure or manage the infection depending on the diagnosis.

In addition to treating your infection, we can also help you manage the infection by contacting any partners who may have been at risk and ensuring they are offered screening too. This is managed discreetly and confidentially and will only be done with your consent.
