We are committed to providing inclusive, respectful and person-centred care for all our patients, including people with learning difficulties.
We understand that visiting a clinic or accessing sexual health information can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s why we aim to make our services as accessible and supportive as possible, offering a safe space where every person can feel welcome and confident to ask questions and make informed choices about their sexual health.
How we support people with learning difficulties
Our staff are trained to work sensitively and respectfully with people with additional needs. We will take the time to explain things clearly, check you understand what’s being said, and adapt our approach to suit your individual communication needs.
If you have a learning difficulty, you can:
- Bring someone with you to your appointment, such as a carer, support worker, friend or family member, if this makes you feel more comfortable.
- Ask for extra time during your appointment to help you feel at ease and make sure everything is clearly explained.
- Request information in easy read format – we are happy to provide written materials in simpler language or with visual supports on request.
- Use our accessibility tools on the website (look for the icon at the top of the page) to help you navigate the information.
Interpreting and communication support
We offer a range of communication support services, including:
- British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation via SignVideo and face-to-face support.
- Telephone interpreting services for people who use another first language.
- Portable hearing loops available for clinic consultations – please ask for this when booking your appointment.
Confidential and friendly service
All our services are confidential, and you don’t need a GP referral to access care. You can book an appointment yourself by calling our team on 0300 131 7010.
If you’re under 25, you can also visit our young people’s drop-in clinic at Victoria Health Centre, NG1 3LW, Monday to Thursday, 2–7pm.
We want everyone to feel confident when accessing their sexual health care – including people with learning difficulties – and we are here to support you every step of the way.
Need help?
If you need help making an appointment or understanding the service, you can ask someone you trust to contact us on your behalf. Or, if you prefer, let us know what support you need when you call, and we’ll do our best to help.
